Our team entered the ESRI Young Scholars Award 2023 to explore GIS technology for problem-solving. Despite not having a background in GIS, we embraced the challenge and focused our project on reimagining Hong Kong tourism in the post-COVID era. Using the MTR and High-Speed Rail, we analyzed travel routes to create unique day trip experiences for tourists. Our efforts were rewarded, as we won first runner-up and received accolades for Best Use of Map-Sensitive Dashboard, Best StoryMap Design, and Best Use of Open Data - Merit. We greatly appreciate our professors' guidance and support throughout the competition.

The team utilized GIS technology to analyze spatial data, particularly focusing on MTR stations and travel routes in Hong Kong. Understanding spatial relationships and how to analyze geographic data is crucial in construction projects for tasks like site selection, transportation planning, and infrastructure development.
The team's ability to divide tasks based on strengths, set internal deadlines, and adhere to schedules reflects strong project management skills. Effective planning is essential in construction to ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget, and meet quality standards.
The project’s focus on the MTR and High-Speed Rail systems highlights the team's knowledge of key infrastructure elements. Understanding transportation systems and their integration into urban planning is fundamental in construction, especially in projects involving large-scale infrastructure.
Facing challenges such as tight timeframes and limited resources, the team used innovative solutions, like learning new software independently and seeking expert advice. This reflects the ability to adapt design and implementation strategies, a crucial skill in construction where unexpected issues often arise, requiring quick thinking and resourcefulness.
The use of ArcGIS and other digital tools to create StoryMaps and dashboards highlights the importance of integrating technology in construction projects. Leveraging digital platforms for planning, visualization, and communication can significantly enhance project efficiency, accuracy, and stakeholder engagement, which is increasingly vital in modern construction practices.
The team showed adaptability by learning and using GIS technology, a field they were not previously familiar with. This ability to quickly learn and apply new tools and techniques to solve real-world problems is crucial for continuous growth and relevance in any professional field.
The project required the team to address the challenge of reimagining tourism in Hong Kong using GIS. They identified relevant data sources, analyzed travel routes, and created innovative solutions for tourists. Problem-solving is a key skill that enables individuals to handle unexpected challenges and find effective solutions.
By dividing tasks based on each member’s strengths and maintaining efficient communication, the team was able to work effectively under a tight schedule. Effective collaboration is essential in achieving common goals and maximizing the strengths of each team member.
The team managed overlapping schedules and deadlines by setting internal deadlines and adhering to them. This demonstrates their ability to prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently, which is vital for balancing multiple responsibilities and ensuring timely project completion.
Through discussions to reach consensus, presenting ideas, and designing a logical, reader-friendly storyline, the team enhanced their ability to communicate clearly and effectively. Strong communication skills are vital for explaining complex concepts, engaging with stakeholders, and ensuring that the intended message is conveyed.
