Driven by curiosity and a desire for practical sustainability, Jun, Sam, and Seong Bin launched “Smart Meters, Smart Savings,” installing smart meters in hotel rooms to visualize energy use. They saw an opportunity to advance ESG in hospitality by adapting proven technology. With Dr. Emily Chen’s mentorship and Hotel ICON’s support, they tackled challenges such as collecting real hotel data and making technical information accessible.
Their teamwork and time management paid off, earning them first place at the 2025 Global ESG Conference Idea Competition. The experience taught them valuable lessons in data analysis, communication, and collaboration, showing how innovative ideas and industry support can create impactful solutions for energy efficiency in hotels.

The team gained a deep understanding of how hotels consume and manage energy across various departments (guest rooms, kitchens, laundry, back-of-house). They learned that many hotels still rely on manual checks, and that implementing smart meters can provide real-time data, helping hotels identify energy waste and improve efficiency without compromising guest comfort.
The project emphasized the growing importance of sustainability and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) in the hotel industry. The team recognized that both guests and investors increasingly expect hotels to adopt green practices, and that smart meters can play a key role in reducing carbon emissions and supporting sustainable tourism.
By using smart meters and digital dashboards, the team learned how to collect, analyze, and visualize operational data. They translated technical data into actionable insights for hotel managers, enabling more informed decisions about energy use, cost savings, and sustainability initiatives.
The team evaluated the financial implications of installing smart meters, including estimating potential savings and demonstrating profitability. Understanding how to conduct cost-benefit analyses is essential for hotel managers when considering investments in new technology or sustainability initiatives.
The project proposed making energy usage visible to guests, encouraging them to participate in sustainability efforts. The team learned that involving guests in green initiatives not only supports hotel goals but also enhances the guest experience by aligning with modern travelers’ values and expectations.
The project began with curiosity about how sustainability concepts like “ESG” and “green hospitality” could be practically implemented in hotels. This curiosity drove the team to seek out new knowledge, ask questions, and pursue innovative solutions—an essential foundation for lifelong learning.
The team demonstrated strong research skills by consulting industry professionals, reviewing case studies, and seeking out real-world data (such as from Hotel ICON). Their ability to gather, evaluate, and synthesize information from multiple sources enabled them to develop a practical and evidence-based proposal.
Throughout the project, the team faced challenges such as understanding diverse hotel operations, translating technical data for non-experts, and finding reliable data. They addressed these by breaking down complex problems, developing user-friendly solutions, and adapting their approach—key aspects of critical thinking and effective problem-solving.
Balancing academic responsibilities with project demands required the team to manage their time efficiently. They learned to allocate tasks, maintain consistent progress, and meet deadlines—skills that are invaluable for lifelong learning and future professional success.
Working together since their freshman year, the team leveraged their familiarity and diverse strengths to coordinate effectively. They also honed their communication skills, especially in presenting technical concepts in accessible ways and delivering presentations to international audiences—crucial for teamwork and ongoing learning in any field.
