Rejuvenation

“Rejuvenation” is a tiny model of Lui Seng Chun on a 1:200 scale. One of the obstacles encountered was the struggle with individual work. As I am solely responsible for the project, sometimes I felt I was not competent and prepared enough to complete my model successfully compared with participants in teams. The unnecessary time spent on fear of failure would cause more procrastination. Therefore, I started early preparation to have more flexibility and room for unpredictable events. I was so glad to receive the championship in the ‘Maintenance and Appreciation of Historical Buildings Creativity Competition – Tiny Model (Public Category).

Awards:
  • Championship in the ‘Maintenance and Appreciation of Historical Buildings Creativity Competition – Tiny Model (Public Category), organized by the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors, in November 2020
Domain Expertise:
Surveying
  • Ada is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Surveying at PolyU. Surveying involves the measurement and mapping of the Earth's surface and is essential in various fields such as construction, engineering, and land development.
Building Surveying
  • Ada chose Building Surveying as her specialization within the surveying discipline. Building Surveyors are involved in various aspects of building development, from the beginning to completion, including diagnosing defects in aging buildings, providing maintenance solutions, and ensuring building safety and health.
Historical Building Conservation
  • Ada participated in a competition focused on the "Maintenance and Appreciation of Historical Buildings." Her outstanding work, "Rejuvenation," involved creating a tiny model of Lui Seng Chun, a historical building, to raise public awareness of heritage conservation and showcase its adaptive reuse as a Chinese Medicine and Healthcare Centre.
Model-Making
  • As part of the competition, Ada demonstrated proficiency in model-making. She used various materials such as cardboard, wood, and PVC sheets to construct the tiny model of Lui Seng Chun on a 1:200 scale.
Construction and Building Services Engineering
  • Throughout her learning journey at PolyU, Ada received practical training in various aspects of construction and building services engineering. This includes knowledge of building services systems in modern buildings, technical drawing skills, and on-site work such as building inspections and condition surveys.

Lifelong Learning Excellence:
Creativity & Innovation
  • Ada demonstrated creative problem-solving skills when she encountered difficulties during the preparation stage of the competition. Instead of remaking the model entirely, she came up with the innovative idea of creating a cross-section design, which allowed her to showcase the internal components of the building while staying within the size specifications.
Critical Thinking and Problem-solving
  • Ada learned the importance of time management throughout her project. She realized that time is a valuable resource, especially in competitions, and early preparation allowed her to have more flexibility, room for trial and error, and the development of new ideas. By setting a realistic model-making schedule and working steadily over several months, she avoided procrastination and optimally realized the overall model presentation.
Networking and Collaboration
  • Ada's participation in the competition provided her with numerous networking opportunities. She interacted with leaders in the industry and showcased her passion and determination for her profession. Additionally, she gained experience in communication when sharing her design concepts with the judging panels and conducting interviews with the media.
Learning-to-learn
  • Throughout her journey, Ada acquired practical knowledge and skills related to building surveying, historical building conservation, and model-making. These skills, including technical drawing, defect diagnosis, building inspection, and management, are highly relevant to her future career as a Building Surveyor and can be transferred to her discipline and the industry as a whole.
