Student BIM Challenge 2021

The Bentley Institute 2021 Student BIM Challenge recognizes innovative and technically advanced projects using BIM technology in infrastructure design and management. We were inspired by virtual exhibitions which are often organized during the pandemic period. Artworks in the exhibitions are precisely 3D captured and modeled by complicated and expensive equipment. We wondered that if it is possible that we can capture any objects at any time anywhere by our smartphones only. This BIM Challenge gave us an opportunity to experiment with this idea and we were so glad to receive the First Runner Up award in Innovation in data capturing for BIM.

Awards:
  • 1st Runner up, The Bentley Institute 2021 Student BIM Challenge
Domain Expertise:
BIM (Building Information Modeling)
  • Both students, Christine and Ann, participated in the Student BIM Challenge organized by the Bentley Institute. BIM technology is used for infrastructure design and management, and they integrated modern artworks with BIM to showcase a unique perspective of Art Tech.
Geomatics and Land Surveying
  • Christine is from the department of Land Surveying and Geo-informatics, while Ann is a graduate from the same department. They have studied geomatics and land surveying, which involves surveying, modeling, analyzing, and visualizing geospatial data.
3D Modeling and Visualization
  • The students mentioned the process of collecting data, 3D modeling, and visualizing the captured objects, including statues, using various techniques and tools. They faced challenges in accurately representing the objects in 3D models.
Project Planning
  • Both students gained experience in project management through their participation in the competition. They had to plan, schedule, and manage the entire project from start to finish, including coordinating tasks and ensuring quality.
Artificial Intelligence
  • Ann mentioned that in their department, they are trained not only in geospatial technologies but also in integrating advanced technologies like artificial intelligence to investigate problems.

Lifelong Learning Excellence:
Adaptability and Flexibility
  • Christine mentioned that from the failures of model construction, she learned the importance of being flexible. She understood that when facing obstacles, it is crucial to have the spirit of never giving up, but what is more important is to be flexible. She shared an example where they had to change their plan and build the model of another statue instead of persisting with a failed one. This experience fostered her ability to cope with changes in circumstances and become more flexible when encountering obstacles.
Critical Thinking and Problem-solving
  • Ann highlighted the importance of rational thinking in overcoming obstacles. When they faced challenges during the competition, they didn't blindly persist in their initial ideas. Instead, they studied the failed cases and avoided the core issues to form successful 3D models. She emphasized the significance of analyzing the situation and choosing the most rational approach to achieve success.
Project Management and Teamwork
  • Both students, Christine and Ann, mentioned the experience they gained in project management. During the competition, they had to run the entire project from planning, scheduling, processing, quality checking, to final product showcase. This hands-on experience helped them understand how to manage and handle projects effectively, which can be beneficial in their future endeavors.
